Krista Johnson’s paintings begin with gardens, flowers and landscape, but they are ultimately about wanting: the impulse to look closely, remember, preserve and possess what cannot remain. Through accumulation, erasure and reconstruction, the image moves between observation and memory, beauty and instability.

Working primarily in oil on canvas, linen and paper, she draws from gardens, flowers and the landscapes she moves through. While rooted in observation, her paintings are increasingly concerned with what remains after looking: fragments of colour, remembered spaces, movement, atmosphere and the emotional pull of a place.

Her recent work considers landscape not simply as something to depict, but as something constructed through paint. Forms emerge and dissolve; passages are interrupted or obscured; areas of representation shift toward gesture and abstraction. Through this process, Krista is interested in the tension between recognition and uncertainty—how a painting can hold the sensation of a garden or landscape without fully describing it.

Krista graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design with a Bachelor of Communication Design in 2000. After working in design and illustration, she shifted her focus to painting in 2015 and has maintained a full-time studio practice for the past decade. Her work is held in private collections throughout Canada and internationally.

She lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia.
